Preventing Drinking and Driving

Tips on how to prevent drunk driving

Be Responsible

  • Choose a designated driver BEFORE you go out, and make sure that person doesn't drink any alcoholic beverages.

  • If nobody in your group is sober, take alternate transportation like a taxi.

  • Don't be afraid to take someone's car keys away. If the person becomes angry, it’s likely proof that you are doing the right thing.

  • Never pressure people to drink alcohol

  • For those drinking and not driving, be sure to stay hydrated and have plenty of food.

Dealing with Drunk Drivers

  • When on the road, be wary of drunk drivers. Some signs to look for are:

    • Weaving, swerving, drifting, or straddling the center line

    • Almost striking an object or vehicle

    • Driving on the wrong side of the road

    • Driving at a very slow speed and responding slowly to traffic signals

    • Braking and turning erratically

  • If you suspect someone might be drunk, keep a safe distance and call 9-1-1.
